Dawg Daze

Dawg Daze is a week of programming that has been set to engage new students on campus. This is a perfect time to reach out to the new Black Huskies and let them know what the BSC is all about.

This year, BSC did not participate in Dawg Daze. To get started, reach out to First Year Programs (FYP) ASAP, for they handle all things Dawg Daze.

Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is an annual event that celebrates African cultural heritage and traditional values. It is an event that brings the Black community together in a spirit of rejoice and community building.

Rough Program Agenda:

  1. Food – ECC
  2. Speakers
    • Zynovia Hetherington – Kwanzaa Principles
    • Rickey Hall – Opening Remarks

    • etc.
  3. Community building activity

Evolve: Celebration of Black History

Evolve is term coined by Adaeze Medani, BSC Director 2015-2016, as a way to represent the evolution of Black history.  During this month, the BSC puts on events that builds community and recognizes the history of our forefathers.

Events:

  1. Movie Nights
  2. Check Up on Us | Mental Health
    • Collaboration w/ SHC
  3. Video Series
  4. Black Out the Night | Open mic
    • Collaboration w/ SARVA
  5. Minority Women in the Workforce
    • Collaboration w/ JCC
  6. Cooking Demo
    • Collaboration w/ HFS
  7. Deray Mckesson
    • Collaboration w/ ECC

Logistic of the events are listed in the drive, in detail!

Interns

Interns are a vital component to the BSC’s success. This year, I had eight interns. Gage your responsibilities for the school year, including your academic course work and BSC goals, and determine how much help you will need.

Things Needed:

  1. Google Form
  2. Marketing
    • #BlackatUW
    • Reaching out to Black RSOs
    • Word of mouth
  3. Interviews
    • Choose at least two people to help conduct interviews
  4. Sending final letters

Last year’s drive has all the files and forms that you can reuse to seek interns!

YouTube Channel

The YouTube channel has been created to engage Black folks not only on campus, but the greater Seattle community. As of right now, we have:

  1. Video Series
  2. Music Videos
  3. Promo Videos
  4. A Day in the Life of a Black Husky.

I have found video to be a powerful tool in terms of marketing and story telling. Reach out to videographers in the area or hire one as your intern if this is something you would like to continue.
