Latinx Student Commission: Director
General Information
Letter to successor
Dear Sara,
Congratulations on being the new director! This job will give you an opportunity to network with different organizations on campus and off campus. You will have the opportunity to express, plan and fulfill your ideas through event planning and programming, which ultimately will support and benefit the Latinx community. I’m anticipating semi-larger than normal participation as everyone is excited to get back to in-person events and trying to find their communities! One tip: when you log into your work accounts from your personal devices make sure to do it in a private window! I always struggled trying to log into zoom for class because I was logged into my work email.
Some things to consider:
- What are some new events that the Latinx community needs? What events should we bring back?
- How can we help RSOs recruit members after returning to in-person interactions? (MEChA has not been able to register as an RSO due to lack of members after the class of 2020 graduated)
- How are the constituents involved with the commission? Do they attend meetings? Reach out to you for help?
- What can the commission do for unity through our groups?
- What do you represent to them? Do they understand your job or what you do?
- Who has been represented through your planned events? Is there any identities you didn’t cover?
- How can we have better turn outs for the events we host/collaborate?
- How are you reaching out to/ maintaining connection with constituents?
These are just a few questions I asked myself for events. And there are going to be some tough times where you can’t really find an answer, but don’t let that define your experience as LSC director. Do your best to involve everyone without excluding or over-highlighting specific groups. Plan events that you know are going to benefit communities, and focus on the communities that are constantly being under-served. Don’t be afraid to talk to Jon! He was very helpful when I was stressed about managing everything or how to best communicate with interns or coworkers.
Let me know if you have any questions! I’ll be leaving you a more defined list of responsibilities in the google drive 🙂
Good luck with this year. I have no doubts you are going to do amazing things in this position! And enjoy the office! :))

La Raza
Budget
Budget Goals:
- Effective and efficient spending of most of your budget by the end of the year
Things to consider:
- How much each event costs you.
- What I’ve spent
- DDLM: about 200 on supplies (left over supplies stored in ECC no need to buy next year)
- Raza Retreat(s): Usually is about 400 (not including facilitator fee)
- DREAM Banquet- about 1500 (includes space, performances, and decorations) (Scholarship managed by ECC, talk to Maggie about possibly bringing the DREAM Banquet back.)
- Unity Day- about 200 (Renting HUB Lawn + maybe more for electricity)
- La Raza Grad- about 2000 (keynotes, space, photography, decorations)
- What I’ve spent
- Consider having promotional event things
- ex. T-shirts, stickers, LSC swag
- Possibly make stickers to promote our new Logo!
- talk to advisors to make sure you can get these without them counting as “gifts”
- ex. T-shirts, stickers, LSC swag
- Find out what you can and can’t spend your money on!
- I had trouble getting flowers because we can’t spend money on them so that came out of my own pocket! Try not to do that!
- Also check to see how reimbursements work- they will take forever to reimburse you things.
- Make sure to write down your sponsorships
- ASUW LSC Sponsored
- Lambda Theta Alpha- Big Man on Campus
- Unidas Seremos- Ritmo Latino
- Viva La Joteria- VJ Conference: Healing & Story Gathering
- MEChA de UW- ACE Conference
- Purple Group- Undocu Grad
- Try to attend your sponsorship events or have interns volunteer with them so it isn’t just a financial supported event!
- ASUW LSC Sponsored
Events
Fall Quarter
- Dia de Los Muertos – November 1

- La Raza Retreat -Happened Winter Quarter
- La Semana de la Mujer – Has NOT happened for two years due to lack of constituents response. This is what orgs have done in the previous years.
- February 12: Kappa Delta Chi- Machismo Workshop
- 7 PM
- Black Room, Ethnic Cultural Center
- February 13: Vagina 101 Lambda Theta Alpha Sorority
- Location HUB 334
- February 14: “Mosquita y Mari” film screening
- MEChA
- 5 PM
- Chicano Room
- February 15: Get Krunk with US
- Unidas Seremos
- 5 PM
- Unity Room, Ethnic Cultural Center
- February 12: Kappa Delta Chi- Machismo Workshop
Spring Quarter
- Traditionally we have had the Dream Banquet April 06 (Sat), but this year we had enough money in the fund to not need a fundraising banquet.
- Unity Day – May 3rd (Saturday)- also cancelled due to covid-19
- La Raza Grad – June 12 (Wed)- cancelled due to covid-19. We ended up letting students pick up their stole and certificate at the ECC.
- Usually we would reserved the intellectual house for grad for 2-8 PM
- If considering letting 2021 grads come back for grad you could do them both in one day. One could be 2-4 and 4:30-6:30. This would allow students who are coming back to participate in 2022 commencement to participate in Raza grad since they’re already in town for the week.
Interns
Intern positions
Event Planning Coordinator
Time — 4 hrs/wk
Event Planning Coordinator Interns will assist the Director in carrying out program/events in the planning and implementation process. This will include, but is not limited to, the following: completing forms, creating Facebook events, reserving spaces, booking Resource Center equipment for tabling, reserving event spaces, communicating with other organizations/ groups departments for collaborations, etc. They should be able to represent the Director when they are not present during meetings and/or events.
Previous directors decided to have two event planning interns because of how much work events take. These interns were in charge of planning retreats and our big family event. This year was mostly focused on planning new events and graduation.
Community Outreach/Political/Senate Coordinator
Time — 4 hrs/wk
Community Outreach/Political Interns will be responsible for maintaining strong and sustainable relationships within the Latinx community on and off campus. They will maintain themselves updated on the community (events, resource fairs, conferences, volunteer opportunities, etc) that pertain to our students. Do research on resources that may benefit our community and collaborate with Social Media/Webmaster Intern to publish them. This intern, in collaboration with director, is responsible for coordinating our constituents for events in the off campus community. They are also responsible for representing La Raza at Senate meetings and being updated with political issues regarding Chicanx/Latinx Identities.
In the past, an intern becomes the Senate chair for our commission. This year (2019-2020), I decided to stay the whole year because our interns didn’t have a lot of background on how senate worked and we thought it would be better if I stayed since I had already picked up on how meetings are run. If you have an intern who is already familiar and comfortable with Senate, I recommend having them go for you if you don’t want to go yourself.
Scribe/Media Intern
Time — 4 hrs/wk
The Scribe is responsible for taking notes during LSC Constituent meetings, send out minutes in a timely fashion and create newsletters for the Commission. In addition, this intern collaborates with the Social Media and Community Outreach interns to distribute written content to newspapers and other public relations entities, such as the Daily. They also handle media responsibility concerning facebook, Instagram, pictures, and if they can, graphic design. Able to attend biweekly meetings is a must.
Requirements:
– Be able to volunteer 4 hours a week with LSC related events and meetings
– Attend constituent meetings
– Volunteer at, and help organize before, LSC events
Interview Questions:
- Why are you interested in being part of LSC?
- Describe yourself as a leader or an organizer
- In what area would you like to see growth for the Latinx community on campus? Describe a program or event that could help with that area of growth
- Question about intersectionality…. How can you advocate for others who don’t share the same identities as you? How can you bring intersectionality to LSC’s events and constituents?
- How does that come into play when organizing events, specifically within LSC?
- How do you work in a team? How would you deal with a conflict with myself, other interns, or volunteers?
- What do you hope to gain from this internship?
- What are your other time commitments this quarter? How many hours do you realistically feel you can and want to put into this internship?
- Are there any positions other than the ones you indicated in your application that interest you / that you would like to be considered for?
- Is there anything else you want me to know about yourself?
